ABOUT THE EVENT

Title:

"Whither metalinguistic negotiations?" A debate between Max Deutsch (HKU) and Alex Kocurek (Cornell)

Abstract:

In recent years, some philosophers have argued that there is a kind of dispute, a metalinguistic negotiation (MLN), in which the disputants appear to disagree about a non-linguistic fact, but are instead engaged in an implicit normative disagreement about how to use a key term that frames the dispute. How common are MLNs in philosophy and elsewhere? Is it true that many of our seemingly first-order disputes are in fact metalinguistic? What alternative interpretations of such disputes are on offer? Alex Kocurek argues that MLNs are widespread; Max Deutsch rejects this view. In this novel debate format, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the pros and cons of each view and to learn more about the arguments.
