Abstract

In this session we explore how conceptual engineering can be integrated in the design of new technologies, which might themselves disrupt existing concepts as discussed in one of the other sessions. We introduce the design for values approach that is aimed at integrating moral values in the design of new technologies; we show how conceptual engineering can be integrated in design for values, and we illustrate this with the example of the new concept of ‘meaningful human control’, which was developed to deal with some of the ethical challenges brought by such technologies as drones, self-driving cars and artificial intelligence.
